The blue mare begins to react defensively to Fell’s initiation of play, as he had expected, but he is delighted when she shortly comes to realize that he is playing a game. He stands with his legs slightly splayed, braced to run like a dog who’s gotten ahold of something he shouldn’t have and relishes in the chase of his scolding handler.

The mare bounds over the snow, tossing her mane about and kicking out with hind legs as she lands. Fell understands this to be playful, and he gives a few crow hops himself as she continues toward him. He begins to run off as she comes to tag him, but he does not truly want to escape the fate of her soft muzzle bump against him, and she is just as quick as he is anyway.

She catches him swiftly, and he is caught, tagged, dramatically defeated. He tosses his head, not failing to catch her blue gaze in his as he does so. Her eyes are friendly, mischievous, curious, and he thinks that if she had wanted him to leave her alone she would have made it clear by now.

His turn to chase, now, but Fell finds he quite enjoys the feeling of being chased. He pivots to face the blue mare, and should she not dart away, he would strike out with his muzzle like a snake and tag her right on the nose. Then he whips back around, bounding through the snow toward the beach. His strides are broken several times by excited little crow hops, and he turns his head once or twice to see if she follows, until he reaches the shore.

There he halts, and turns his head to invite her to swim beside him, for the sea is cold and unfriendly, and it’s best to make the journey side by side.
