Canis let a few heartbeats pass before wresting his mind from thoughts of his mother and sister. He'd managed not to lose focus of the conversation -- wouldn't that be embarrassing -- for more than a few seconds. She hadn't been here long if what she said was true. Perhaps he'd asked too soon. Due to his own lack of experience, Canis knew he didn't have much to offer in the way of advice for this island, not that she had asked for any. He'd barely left the reaches of the Lagoon before coming upon her.

Encelia spoke again. Her words softened him in an unexpected and unfamiliar way. Canis had grown up on the outskirts of the Salem territory, barely managing to play with other siblings his age much less other horses in general. He'd never been alone, what with his mother for company and then the arrival of his baby sister. Then again, being lonely is different, isn't it? Perhaps it was that small, lonely part of him that let the silver-dappled stallion empathize with her. How long did he debate about leaving home himself?

A glimmer of a smile pulled at his pale lips. He wished the expression would reassure her that he was not put off by her question. Still drawn by the thread of camaraderie he thought he felt a few moments before, Canis decided to answer her as honestly and as coherently as possible. Nodding both to himself and her, the grullo male spoke: "I feel as though my reason for leaving lies in the same vein as yours."

The young male took a moment to consider the recent past and the years since his birth: the years spent on the edge. He never knew why his dam had reservations about being close with the other mares, or if she even did in the first place. It was all conjecture on his part as to an explanation for what felt like isolation. Still, it was something he'd never asked her about. "Life was.. stagnant, for lack of a better word. I needed change or for something to happen. So, I did it. I left."

Thoughts of the weeks leading up to his departure flashed in his mind's eye. The hints about traveling to see the other islands. Going a little too far past the borders. How he'd woken early for days and watched the sun rise over the horizon, bathing everything in a soft blush light. His next words were softer and less guarded, only hinting at the realized regret. "I don't even think I said goodbye."
