This has some truth to it. In a recent PMD meeting, the recent legislation was discussed that Local 2 was pushing about EMS discipline. During the update and discussion, the general consensus was that "something has to be done to combat the serious infractions that have occurred lately." The BLS program is under consideration, but the "1 and 1" on ambulances gained some momentum. As some of the old medics know, the only thing stopping this from happening before was Region 11 and some of the older pro CFD PMD's. The IDPH allows this in neighboring systems. Since they're slowly leaving, the idea is being revisited. The thought is since many FF paramedics have opted out for EMT-B status, and some still carrying paramedic licenses for other departments, they could be utilized as the FPM and if the run was booked as ALS by the call-taker, an ALS company would also respond, resulting in 2 paramedics on an ALS run. Ambulances could then be added, and hopefully alleviate some of the heavy handed discipline lately. Contractual issues were not discussed because this wasn't the forum for that, but looking for solutions to a known problem.
