Numbness had begun to steal over the dethroned King, seeping into his body and stealing away all of his emotions. In some ways, it was very much preferable to the sadness that had dogged his steps for years, and in other ways it left him feeling even more empty than before.
Solomon hated himself for it, but he did not seek out the mares that had followed him here. He was both incredibly grateful for and frustrated with them in equal measure; staying here with him would put all of their lives at risk when they all returned to the harsh Tinuvel winter. Food was thin here, making it hard to put on the healthy coat of fat they would need to survive the cold without the winter coat they would have grown if they had stayed on Tinuvel as he'd asked. And yet, who was he to admonish them? Who was he to lament their steadfast loyalty when he had proven time and time again he was no stallion worth following.
The tobiano shook himself, wishing he could shake the thoughts right out of his head. He knew on a base level that his own self-recrimination was mostly what stood between himself and fixing what he had broken, but knowing and changing things were two very different things.
The hot sun beamed down on him like a frowning sentry, coaxing sweat to appear in the warmest parts of his body as it often did. Though Solomon had once frequently traveled here in search of gems like Golden Illusion and his glass-faced girl, he had not spent any significant time on this island. Even his recuperation after his battle with Rougaru had been short-lived in comparison. And after this shameful stay, he had no desire to return.
The tobiano huffed a sigh and turned to look back over the desolate scrubland he'd lain claim to, his gaze faraway.
