sleep is only an escape

finley

Finley would not have been surprised if Siren had turned on him and attacked him in the haze of her grief. Or even just because, as they had scuffled before. Instead, she had settled the moment she had laid her eyes on him, and then turned away to stare off in the direction of whatever resident had claimed that part their home. He hadn’t bothered to meet anyone here, not seeing it worth his time, especially when he still had no plans to stay.

When she spoke, his seemingly permanent slanted back ears pitched forward, then immediately fell back again with a snort. “Would it matter if I did?” he asked. “Nothing I say will make any difference.” She hadn’t listened to his warning, and it was clear she already understood it was her fault. Punished with the knowledge of what was now happening to her foal, as she wasn’t the only one to hear the fighting cats.

“You are not the first to make a name for yourself in the path of violence.” Finley stated, though he did not speak the name of his mother. Not wanting to explain the lineage he carried, or how the warrior Queen had once been drenched in the blood of others upon this very island. “You only have to be smarter about it.” Finley knew if Siren remained on this path, there was only ever going to be one ending for her.
