A poor unfortunate woman who has already endured 37 hours of labor is once again sent back to her room, the doctors determining she is once again experiencing a
"false labor". Her bed is wheeled outside in the hallway to await transport when a nurse happens to walk by. The woman reaches out and grab's the nurse's arm and cries out "I'm having this baby!". The nurse, a mother of 3, takes one look at the woman's face and starts yelling for help.
The baby is delivered by this nurse before the doctor's can be summoned back and the baby is born breech. The baby's legs are bent behind his back and he's delivered basically backwards.
The mother and baby survived this horrible birth for two reasons. One, the baby is six & a half weeks early and weighs less than 5lbs. Secondly, the woman was blessed with a "square pelvis" which doctors call baby factories because of the normal easy birth canal.
The baby is a mess, suffering numerous injuries in the rough exit and will have ongoing physical "issues" due to forming in the womb in this crazy position and being born so early. He'll wear various braces for several years to get his spine bent back in the proper position, he'll not start walking till well past his 3rd birthday. His lungs aren't fully developed and he'll deal with the "Croup" till he's around 8 years old having to sleep in a tent consisting of a bed sheet thrown over an umbrella and a Vick's Vaporizer churning nearby. Today he still has the lungs of a flea and a back that wakes him up multiple times a night.
We're celebrating a birthday today of someone who probably shouldn't even be here... but thanks to an incredible Mom (and a passing Nurse) I am. Replies:
