Is the Vibe going after a segment that nobody else is which is filling a nitch?
Seems like most stations play about a third of their playlist same as all the rest, hoping to be advertising FIRST!
If the Vibe isn't meeting an unmet need, they should change music to MEET one. An agegroup or demographic.
All chick music, all metal, all boomer60s-75, whatever. Music is far more diversified and so are we they do what we did in American Forces Radio, the only station in town that spoke English. Mixing country and rock and easy listening, soul, jazz an blues, traditional country. Go after the age grouop that listens to talk because they can't stand everybody else. It really was a horrible format because a third of it was unfamiliar except for soldiers. Repetition does broaden their acceptance. Light classical is hard to find today since PBS screws it up mixing obscure low-interest talk with familiar classics. I've always sensed chick music, ballads and love songs about catching the boy and keeping him is the most under played format because most music directors are homophobic males. Speaking of that, there was a story I read yesterday to my surprise that millennials report themselves as transgender 7 to 20 percent of that population. What do they listen to?
Who knows, ya might bring in listeners that can't stand radio because you don't target them. Why should a cluster compete with their own properties?
Just thinkin ya might wanna look outside the box, since the perception might be that most radio stations sound alike and a lot of people don't listen at all! Why not? Go ask em! You won't find out in the studio!
