After a lot of work, a great step is taken to professionalize the sport and lay the foundations for the future
Jai Alai League, the cesta punta league that brings together the main competitions of Iparralde (North Basque Country--France) and Hegoalde (South Basque Country--Spain), multiplies venues, dates and competitions, presenting an uninterrupted calendar that lasts all year. One year after its launch, the Cesta Punta League went from four to thirteen competitions;
they add Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Zumaia, Markina-Xemein and Lekeitio; The Iparralde tournaments are doubled and the door is opened to the incorporation of new venues this year.
Fans and pelotaris demanded a year-round calendar as well as the unification of the best tournaments in the same format. Finally, and after a lot of work, the league manages to unite the best pelota players in the same circuit, professionalizing the sport and laying the foundations for the future.
It goes from four to thirteen competitions
In its first year of operation, the Jai Alai League has been made up of four main competitions (Eusko Label Winter Series, Biarritz Golden Glove, San Juan de Luz Internationals and Pau Cup) plus the final phase of Durango, where they were proclaimed league champions Aritz Erkiaga and Gorka Sorozabal.
In this second season we move on to a total of fourteen competitions divided into two categories. In the Slam category, the Cesta All Star of San Juan de Luz, Bilbao Iron Cup, the Grand Slam of Markina-Xemein and the Grand Slam of Gernika (summer) are incorporated. As for the Masters, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Zumaia, Lekeitio, the Cesta de Nadau de Pau and the Biarritz International Open enter.
In reality, the scoring Masters add up to a total of fifteen since the San Juan da Luz Internationals, the Biarritz Golden Glove and the Pau Cup, all of them in the Slam category, are internally made up of four, four and two Masters respectively.
All of them finish in Slam format with the best pointers of the Masters.
Bilbao enters strongly with the "Iron Cup"
Bilbao enters as the stronghold of the league with a Slam category competition that will begin on May 10 and will end on June 7. The Sports Fronton will host the BILBAO IRON CUP matches for five Fridays in a row. A top category tournament, within the Jai Alai League calendar and therefore, scoring in the league.
Vitoria-Gasteiz is also new with a Master tournament at the Olabe fronton (April), and the incorporation of Zumaia,
Markina-Xemein and Lekeitio as official venues of the league.
A schedule of more than 100 games
With the expansion and incorporation of new venues in the league, cesta-punta now achieves a calendar that covers the entire year and that begins and ends in the month of October.
There are more than 100 professional matches spread across a total of ten locations.
The Jai Alai League will be resolved in the FINAL FOUR in Durango with the best pelotaris of the season, according to the ranking. The tournaments have different scores, depending on their category and the calendar is open since the League is negotiating the possibility of incorporating new venues this year.
