She isn't the most beautiful creature to look upon. She is rangy, strong necked, and sloped faced. Rugged and harsh like the steppes she grew up on.
There had been times in her early life that she had seen horses of more elegant build - lithe Arabians and fleet footed thoroughbreds. They had not stayed long - or rather they stayed forever having lost their life to the bitter cold of winter. Their beauty had not saved them.
Her ugliness had not saved her.
One day while galloping through the windswept grasses, Tuya had misstepped. She had not seen the hole in the earth until her leg was already in it and she went sailing end over end. She should have broken her leg. There had been a distinct pop in her left knee that she felt more than she heard. Her white leg... the one her mother had always frowned at as if it were a bad omen. When she stood she almost fell to the ground again. She knew what would happen next. She had seen it happen before. She never thought it would happen to her. Her herd said their goodbyes as if she were already dead, and then they left her.
Tuya wandered slowly, barely sleeping for fear of predators, until eventually she came to the sea. The desire to swim had been strong. Inexplicable. Her family had roamed the steppes for generations. They did not leave. But Tuya did.
And now she is here in the heart of autumn. Still the grasses are tender between her teeth. She grazes here and there as she walks, water drying into salt paths in her fur. She hides her injury well, but there is still a shortness in her stride. She may seem preoccupied, but she is aware of those that mingle around her. They look nothing like her. Most of them are pretty and tall. She huffs and continues on. Replies:
