Re(3): Hall of Fame #134: Remembering Ocala absurdity Posted on April 7, 2024 at 07:49:24 AM by 40yrfan
Alecs, that must have been a great experience. Dale Popp is a gentleman as well as a gentle man. I believe that he worked at the fronton for over 30 years, including stints as a player, mutuel clerk, and General Manager. Dale was a good player and an even better GM. He was very innovative and used promotions to get fans into the seats, a task that was made difficult as the sport's popularity was in decline. He, and I believe, his wife, made vast improvements to the Carom Club restaurant. When I had jai alai fan friends from Miami visit me during an Ocala meet, we would eat dinner and watch the matches there. I still remember seeing Dale in the lobby greeting incoming fans. Thanks Dale. And thank you Alecs1974 for sharing your story. Replies: There have been no replies.
