THE THREE HONOURS.
His Majesty the K i n g has conferred upon the Regiment the
honour of hearing on its colours the motto, " Omnia Audax "
and " T h e Red Rose of Lancaster." He has also been
graciously pleased to sanction the addition to the busby of a
primrose hackle. These are great honours. Many years ago,
soon after the late Colonel Clarkson succeeded to the command
•of the ist Battalion, he endeavoured to get a hackle for the
Regiment. More recently the late Generals, Sir F. Horn and
Pollexfen Radcliffe, were approached by Colonel Glencross to
•obtain official recognition of the motto, but all to no purpose.
Few of those who were aware of what had, in this instance
been asked for, were sanguine of a successful result. The
majority thought it was the old story of " the prophet crying
in the wilderness." But these were the faithless ones. On
this occasion the Regiment was fortunate in its advocate, who
was at once skilful and persevering. Colonel Lees Knowles,
'the Honorary Colonel of the 3rd V. Battalion, took the matter
in hands. He appealed privately both to the Secretary of
State, Lord Lansdowne, and the Commander-in-Chief, Lord
Wolseley. From the first he won a sympathetic hearing, and
practical advice as to the form the memorial praying for
the concession should take. Lord Wolseley, we are bound to
say, to use an apt expression, threw cold water on the appeal.
T h e final decision bestowing the " H o n o u r s " came from the
present Commander-in-Chief, Earl Roberts. The petition of
t h e Colonel of the Regiment and the Commanding Officers of
t h e four line Battalions, states the whole case, and is here
;given in extenso :—
T o the Right Honourable the Marquess of Lansdowne,
Secretary cf State for War.
Mv LORD—We, the undersigned Lieutenant-Colonels of the

four Line Battalions of the Lancashire Fusiliers, and the Colonel
of the Regiment (General Sir E. A. Holdich, K.C.B.), have
the honour to approach your lordship, and to plead for your
favourable consideration that the following honours may be
conferred upon the Regiment:
First. A hackle, in colour primrose, to be worn in the side
of the busby.
Secondly. Official recognition of the motto, " Omnia Audax."
Thirdly. The Red Rose of Lancaster to be borne on the
colours.
In support of our application we beg leave to remind your
Lordship that the Lancashire Fusiliers, formerly the XX.
Regiment, has a long and distinguished career, covering a
period of over two centuries.
For eight years it was commanded by General Wolfe.
From the Duke of Wellington it received the highest praise
that a great Commander could bestow. He described it " as
the best and most distinguished Regiment of the many he had
commanded."
At the Battle pf Inkerman the Regiment suffered more
severely than any regiment engaged, the Guards excepted.
The 2nd Battalion of the Regiment has recently gained fresh
honours in South Africa.
It took a prominent part in the four days' fighting in thevicinity
of Venter's Spruit (20th to 23rd January).
The crowning service of the Battalion was at Spion Kop
(24th January). In his despatch to the War Office, General
Sir Redvers Buller reported that the 2nd Battalion Lancashire-
Fusiliers " had magnificently maintained the best traditions of
the British Army." A more splendid tribute it would be impossible
to offer.
The first honour that we respectfully ask for is a small
addition to the uniform. As Fusiliers, that the Regiment
should be permitted to wear in the busby a primrose—yellow
hackle. Yellow was the colour of the facings when it was.
known as the XX. Regiment.
The second honour we respectfully ask for is that the Regimental
motto, " Omnia Audax," may be officially recognised
by being borne on the colours of the Regiment, and by being
placed in the Official Army List.
We are unable to state when the motto was first adopted by
the Regiment, but it was in use in the early part of the nineteenth
century. It is inscribed with the crest on some of the
oldest pieces of plate in the officers' mess of the ist Battalion,
and it is on the mess furn'ture, appointments, etc.
As honours precisely similar to the foregoing have been
Tecently conferred, and in our humble opinion most deservedly
so, on the Royal Irish Fusiliers, we are emboldened to hope
that the Lancashire Fusiliers may not be deemed less deserving,
and that our request may meet with a favourable response from
your Lordship.
The third and last honour that we ask for is. that the Red
Rose of Lancaster may be granted as an additional badge on
the colours of the Regiment.
Since the battle of Minden (ist August, 1759), the rose has
been the emblem of the Regiment. On every recurring anniversary
each man of the Regiment wears a rose. In this battle
the loss of the Regiment was so great that it was struck off
duty. On the colours of the ist Battalion the rose has been
handed down in a special manner.
The Red Rose of Lancaster is the emblem of the county,
and of which all Lancashire men are proud. So that to the
Lancashire Fusiliers, whose ranks are filled with Lancashire
men, the Red Rose is in a two-fold sense the symbol.
In conclusion, we beg leave to assure your Lordship that
these honourable marks of Royal favour would be highly appreciated
by all ranks in the Lancashire Fusiliers. By the
older soldiers who have so worthily upheld the warlike character
and traditions of the Regiment, each man of whom would
justly feel that he had helped to win these badges of distinction.
T o the younger soldiers, particularly the newly-formed Bat

talions, they would be an incentive to emulation, to which their
officers could with effect direct their attention.

( S i g n e d ) FRED. HAMMERSLEY, L t . - C o l o n e l . Commanding
4th Bn. Lancashire Fusiliers.
(Signed) E. A. HOLDICH, General and Colonel, the
Lancashire Fusiliers.
After six months had elapsed the following letter was received
by Colonel Lees Knowles signifying the King's pleasure. The
three honours were graciously sanctioned, and all were ready tosing
halleluiahs.
20/20/28 (A.G.I.C.). War Office, London, S.W.,
1 7 th June, 1901.
SIR—Referring to the memorial signed by the Officers Commanding
the Line Battalions of the Lancashire Fusiliers, I am
directed by the Secretary of State for War 10 inform you that
His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve
of the motto " Omnia Audax " and the distinction of the " Red
Rose of Lancaster " being borne upon the colours of these Battalions.
I am to add that the application for permission 'to wear a
primrose-yellow hackle in the busby is being submitted to His
Majesty for approval.—I have, etc.,
( S i g n e d ) J. H. LAYE, D . A . G.
General Sir E. A. Holdich, K.C.B., Colonel of the Regiment,
expressed his appreciation in this letter, dated 30th July, 1901 :
MY DEAR COLONEL LEES KNOWI.ES—Many thanks for the
paper containing the report of the reception of the Volunteers
terest, and I heartily congratulate the Battalion for the spirit
shown by the men. The Militia Battalions appear to be keeping
up the record. I ought to have written to you before this
t o thank you for the interest you took in the Regiment with
regard to the sanctioning of the badge and motto to be worn
"by the Regiment. From what I leam it is greatly due to your
exertions that the petition was entertained and the request ac-
•oeeded to, and I am sure the Regiment will always remember
it.—Believe me, yours very sincerely,
( S i g n e d ) E. A. HOLDICH,
Colonel, Lancashire Fusiliers.
