The Best BT songs IP: 193.137.151.229 Posted on September 8, 2009 at 02:12:04 PM by J Richman
Let's face it. Lyrically and musically, Chris is the brains behind the operation. The two Big Mistakes (for me, at least) are (1) not releasing a three-minute radio version of Tree House as the firstsingle from BRLD and (2) not letting Chris write and sing more on the early albums.
I heard Bill was living out in Lexington selling real estate. I wish him well, I really do. But I cringe when I hear lines like like "Make that house your home" or "I'm a lucky man/ Glass of wine in my hand" (even if those reflect the deepest things going on in Bill's life these days). I wouldn't care so much except that by their mere proximity, awful songs like Thrown take away from the genuinely first-rate stuff Chris has been putting on BT records lately. And who could forget the "Wherefore art thou Johnny Carson?" disaster.
I know this post will probably be removed in a matter of hours by the new Michael Newman (whoever that is nowadays). But I think respectfully written critical comments from real fans should be posted here from time to time, so that people can either respond to them thoughtfully or else simply ignore them as the particular case may warrant. BT has inspired me many, many times -- I love all their records, even the one with Postcard on it -- and if I didn't care so much, I wouldn't waste my time wondering why so many lesser bands "made it big" while BT never got much of a payday.
