Carden Alvar Nature Board by Bob BowlesSaturday May 7

Spent 6 or 7 hours prowling around today in and around Kirkfield. Had a productive day, with 35+ species in total.

Highlights include:

Male Wood Duck all dolled up

Eastern Kingbirds, which I first saw in Vancouver, where they are more plentiful there than the Western Kingbird, oddly enough

Beautiful Yellow Warbler

Northern Rough-Winged Swallow

Wilson Snipe, Loggerhead Shrike (x2), Virginia Rail (x3, with photos), American Bittern (Only heard, but what an odd call!), Sora (heard several), Ovenbird, Brown Thrasher - all first timers for me!

Hoped for the Yellow Rail thats being heard, but no luck. Maybe if I was there in the evening it would be more active?

Really excited for what the rest of the summer has in store!
