Carden Alvar Nature Board by Bob BowlesWoodpecker Tales

Okay, I admit it - I'm creating another generation of addicts.

I started feeding the birds peanut butter 2 winters ago. The woodpeckers love it. And now, two sets of hairy woodpeckers are raising their kids on peanut butter. The parents come, eat a little and then fill their bills with as much peanut butter as possible before flying off to their respective nests.

Also, if you are driving along Victoria Road, especially southbound from the new development, check out the hydro poles on the west side of the road. They now run from south of the park, Camp Inn on Duck Lake, north to the new development. And the woodpeckers have already made their mark on many of them. Just south of the park, at least 5 poles in 6 have what appear to be full sized nesting holes. One pole has at least 2 holes. These poles were installed just this spring and apparently suit the woodpeckers to a T.
