Hope this is working now...2 days ago...Wednesday...our oldest son, Chris Jr. was on a mission in western Afghanistan...he flies on an Army Medivac Black Hawk helicopter and it crashed while attempting to pick-up other injured military personnel. All four crew members (2 pilots, a medic and the crew chief, Chris) managed to escape the helicopter after it hit the side of a mountain, before it exploded. Initially it was very difficult for us to get details (still not sure we have an exact picture of what happened)...but bottom line is that all crew members are still with us. Chris suffered several injuries and earlier today or late yesterday he was moved to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan (a large base)...then we believe that this afternoon or early this evening, he departed Afghanistan enroute to Germany for further medical evaluation. We are still waiting for confirmation that he has made it to Germany. He's banged up and will require at least 2 surgeries to fix his injuries. They removed a neck brace today indicating that his neck is fine. Our understanding is that once they evaluate him in Germany, they will decide where best to send him in the states for surgery/rehab. That's pretty much all we know for now. For some reason on Wednesday when I tried to post this...no one could see my posts...I couldn't understand why 14 hours after I posted it there were no comments, but when I post a photo of a Buffalo here in Yellowstone I get 10 comments in 30 minutes!
Anyway...special thanks to Debbie Hower for helping me get the word out and to everyone else for your prayers and support. For those that do not know Chris Jr., he's been a Tampa Police Officer for almost 3 years. After 6 years active duty Army with 3 tours in Iraq, he joined the Army Reserves and this is his 1st deployment to Afghanistan with his reserve unit. He and his wife, Dottie, just welcomed the birth of their first child about 7 weeks ago. Thanks again and we'll try to keep everyone updated as things progress. Replies: There have been no replies.
