They clearly dont want to find them, or they would have gotten more info. The standard procedure is what you heard. If the reporting person persists, they then often get into belittling the report. We had a mother with cubs in the berkshires two summers ago reported to them. They were around for a while. They refused to go up and try to look at them. Just FYI back in the 1960's when we saw a moose in Otis, we reported that to them. Their response? "you are mistaken, its someone's horse that escaped, or an unusually dark deer. The nearest moose are in far northern VT and NH". Couldnt quite use the "escaped pet" on them though . The hilltown people that see mountain lions are sick of the response, and now refer to them as the "bird and bunny folks". Not going to be long now.
