Just north of the Sedge Wren Marsh on Wylie Road is a small parking lot (west side of road) and just north of this is a gate (east side of the road) with a sign on it saying “ Welcome Birders “ after passing through this gate (be sure to close it and put the chain on the nail) you will see an old crumbling barn with a fairly new looking silver metal roof.
The flycatcher was in the tree line on the north side of this structure.
The Bird
The bird was roughly the same size as a Great-crested Flycatcher and as it perched on a high snag we noticed that it had a very pale (whitish in the sun light) breast without any hint of yellow below the breast). It also had a rusty tail and a brown head and not a very noticeable amount of gray on the breast if any, light wing bars and again not any noticeable yellow below breast but the bright sun shining on the bird may have washed out any yellow that may have been there and no it did not call.
I am not calling it nor am I suggesting it was but it did remind me of Ash-throated Flycatcher in it’s appearance though they are not known to appear in Southern Ontario in Spring but that may be “so far”.
We put this bird down as a flycatcher sp.
I post this in case anyone may be interested in trying to re-find this bird if they are confident that they may be able to ID it or the chance that it may call if seen and rule out or ID it as a ......................... Flycatcher.
