Carden Alvar Nature Board by Bob BowlesWed, Sep 04, 2013 sightings., Sep 04

Six of us spent all day on a Carden / Kirkfield area circuit.

Birds
1 Olive-sided Fly junction of Wylie and Alvar Rds.
2 Bald Eagle just fledged? and attracted to a barnyard--Centennial Park Rd. n. of Eldon
4 Pied-billed Grebe--Mitchell Lake
2 calling Virginia Rail in marsh 1 km. n. of Prospect Marsh
1 Yellow Warbler trapped n the blind at box #10 (we climbed up to rafters, caught and released)

Virtually zero typical spring grassland species; i.e., no bluebirds, swallows, sparrows. I had hoped we would run into a flock somewhere

Dragonflies
2 Halloween Pennant--Juniper Road
1 red Tramea, probably Carolina Saddlebags (our best sighting)--Juniper Road

Butterflies-11 species, many fresh second brood including:
300 Common Sulphur puddling on the road
8 Bronze Copper
8 Gray Comma
6 Viceroy
zero Monarch, zero skippers

A lovely day to be literally in the field
