Well turns out there are over 20 cougars in that northern peninsula area. But they were very rarely seen, and until the virtual flood of cameras up there, no pictures or other evidence that is considered "confirmable" was found. If 20 are that elusive, we could have (which is what we suspect) smaller numbers in New England that are being seen, (like in Michigan), but not a lot of evidence found. Note there were no road kills in Michigan either, which the detractors claim would be happening. Michigan DNR is totally convinced, but the FWS and a group of detractors remain. They tried to "invalidate" the collection of scat for example and the resulting DNA work, but Michigan DNR did it again and came up with the same results. ALL the DNA found was NOT from released pets, and it matches the ancient DNA from Michigan, and the others I mentioned. They are all the same. So these stories of cats walking from South Dakota to CT are pure rubbish. That was the original theme of the posting. If you look back at what has happened in Michigan, its EXACTLY what is taking place in New England now. They dismissed reports, claimed they cant be there, no evidence, and now, after TWO massive efforts to COLLECT the evidence and do DNA, they still sit there and claim they aren't there, or are released pets or transients.
