As a track promoter I look at the lack of cars available and realize low car counts mean low fan turnouts which equals closed racetracks. Weekly high dollar races with top notch cars can no longer be a moneymaker for all but a few tracks. Sponsorship endorsement is way off the mark. So much for the doom and gloom! I believe there is an answer and I don't mind sharing.
As everybody knows I have recently taken over the reins of one of, if not the finest short track racing facility in the country. Built at a cost somewhere over $25,000,000 it has sat empty for at least four years. It’s not up to me to speculate what happened, my job is to pump some life into the facility. Go to mansfieldmotorsportspark.net and look at our tentative schedule. You will notice that (A) we are only running about once a month, (B) We are only running a few races and they are all different and (C) we only have one price and that’s for any event held on a Saturday night. Other than the racing we will have a huge Fireworks Show on July the Fourth accompanied by a Thrill Show with all the trimmings and for the kids MEGASAURUS.
Labor Day brings the Riley McCord Monster Truck Show to the track. It's an event like you have never seen at MMP and………wait for it……………a summertime Rodeo with real horses and bulls.
BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE……
We are looking really hard at running 4 & 6 cyl. small cars on the quarter mile track inside the big track every Friday night. It’s designed to be inexpensive and fun. $15 to sit in the grandstand, $15 for a pit pass and anytime someone wants to leave their seat and go to the pits just do it. Like drag racing everybody gets an all-grounds pass for $15.
The cars don’t need roll bars but they must strip the inside of the car of anything burnable, use DOT street tires, put the battery in the trunk, install a race style seat and a 4-point harness and you will be ready to go racing. To make sure this remains a hobby and no one goes crazy building a bullet these will be trophy only races.
Whether we go ahead with this will be determined by the amount of interest shown. Replies: There have been no replies.
