harness your blame, walk through
The rock was warm against her back, pulling the shivers away and leaving her quiet. Greer curled herself as tight as possible in the tiny alcove, leaving only her wounded hind leg stretched out towards her muzzle. The injury had mostly stopped bleeding, as long as she didn’t move much. The best the little she-wolf could hope for was to remain silent and hidden until she was well enough to venture back out into the world.
The entire incident had been devised by fools. Greer wanted to bite her other leg every time she thought about it. Caught alone and unsuspecting in broad daylight, pah! She had been daydreaming and subsequently attacked by a lunatic. Figures. Had that other she-wolf not come to her aid Greer wouldn’t have even had a bad leg to complain about. The tussle had been short and sweet, resulting in a lamed Greer nursing her lamed pride as well as the physical injury.
Greer sighed huffily, supposing she should be grateful for her life. But after limping out of the valley and hiding among the stones with a healthy fear of her own kind she didn’t feel grateful for much of anything. Just angry. ”Think of me. You deserved it.” Aksel whispered sweetly in her ear. Greer hissed and looked around herself, but was met only with yellow stone. The apparition of her former travel partner still wouldn’t leave her in peace, even when she could most use it.
The wolf was lifted suddenly from her brooding by the soft sound of claws on rock not far off. Her whole body tensed, but she didn’t dare move. Perhaps the creature would bypass her hiding spot…but no, of course not. The steps came steadily closer along with the wafting scent of wolf. Greer curled herself smaller still, trying as hard as she could to look like a shadow among the rocky terrain. The wolf would likely come into sight at any moment.
Greer closed her pale eyes.
