harness your blame, walk through
Luck was not favoring Greer. She wasn’t really surprised, considering the week she’d been having. Death threats, homicidal attempts, hallucinations, if she hadn’t been in such a foul mood she might have been excited to find out what the next development in her life was going to be. Unpleasant, but certainly interesting.
The footsteps came closer, sometimes pausing and moving in various directions. The wolf was clearly trying to track her. Greer held in a dramatic sigh, wondering if this was where she would meet the end of her short little life. Interesting indeed. Fear made her heart beat rapidly but apathy let her raise her head to stare at her doom face to face. And sure enough, some paces away, the stranger stood peering at her.
Greer squinted suspiciously, her pale yellow eyes roving over his form. He was young, but already a good deal larger than she, which did not bode well. But what struck her most was his interesting coat, a brindled mix of black a gray with lighter markings on his face. She was dazzled for a moment, forgetting the danger he presented. She had seen so many fascinating other wolves in this land, full of wild markings and brightly colored eyes; sometimes it was hard not to stare. She herself was so small and drab.
Pretty or not, Greer didn’t want to take chances with company. She lifted herself into a sitting position and flicked her ears to catch the kid’s words. He was big, but his sentence still cracked a little. “Ah’m peachy. Leave me alone.” She lifted her lips, not quite a full growl but a small warning. Greer lamely tried to hide her wounded leg, though the scent of blood was sure to give her away. She hated seeming weak, and it gave others a reason to take advantage of her.
