Eddy Survives to Win $1000 in Memorial Day Weekend Special
The Sandusky Speedway hosted its third event of the racing season on Sunday. Mike White overcame last week’s drivetrain ills in order to win the Street Stock twenty lap feature, while Jerry Karl continued his winning streak in the Ohio Stock twenty lap event. The modified division saw twenty-two of those kings of the Midwestern weekly racing scene take the green flag for the thirty grueling circuits, only to be bested by the Michigander invader Travis Eddy. The final event of the night would see Dan Smith return to the speedway’s victory lane in the Hobby Stock class.
The Milan Automotive Street Stock division would be first on track with Carl Smith’s #54 Kelly Brothers Construction machine and Collin Penn’s Intertek Machine and Tool car sitting on the front row for the start of the twenty lap grind. Carl Smith would go to the lead on the start, bringing with him last week’s feature winner, the #16 Track Kings car of Logan Cooper, in order to advance Cooper to the runner up position. Cooper would lay the bumper to Smith for a handful of laps until Cooper’s right front tire went flat from contact on lap six, bringing out the caution as Cooper slowed on the track.
Carl Smith would again have to hold off Collin Penn on the restart, but Penn would fall to third as Mike White’s #51 JPI Collision car powered by on the inside line. Smith would also fall, first from the lead as White passed him on the outside coming to the halfway mark of the race, then Penn would motor by for second with just three laps to go. Mike White, Collin Penn, Carl Smith, Logan Cooper, and Gary Toth would make up the finishing order.
In the Digital Yalo Ohio Stock twenty lap event, Roger Arbogast’s #88 Automotive Electric car would pace the field alongside the 2009 Sandusky Speedway Street Stock champion, Clayton Karl. The duo would drag race down the front straightaway, with Karl going to the point off of turn two. Arbogast would begin his descent through the running order on lap three as Rich Clingan took the runner up position. Clingan would also get by Clayton Karl on lap seven for the lead on the outside line.
Julia Buckles would make her presence known during the middle stages of the race, stealing the second position from Clayton Karl on lap twelve. Unfortunately for her, she would spin in turn two before the lap could be scored. Rich Clingan, Clayton Karl, Jerry Karl, Joe Borczuch, and Jeff Karl would make up the top five.
On the restart, Jerry Karl would get around his brother Clayton for the runner up position. Jerry would also take the lead on the outside line from the struggling Rich Clingan with just five laps to go. He would go on to win over Rich Clingan, Clayton Karl, Joe Borczuch, Jeff Karl, Julia Buckles, and Roger Arbogast.
The modified race saw a full field of twenty-two modifieds take the green flag, led by the #73 Heritage Plumbing car of Mike Sheppard and the #15 Scott Rods sponsored machine of Kenny Calhoun. The first ten laps would be plagued by nearly as many cautions as the Michigan invaders of Travis Eddy and Joey Morisette picked off positions through attrition and restart mastery. Morisette and Eddy would take the top two spots on lap ten, with Eddy taking the point from Morisette on lap fourteen.
The race would settle down in its mid stages as Eddy led Morisette, Kenny Sharp, Tyler Shullick, and Joe Quinn for ten circuits until a lap twenty-four caution for Shullick spinning in turn four. On the restart, Kenny Sharp and Joey Morisette would lock wheels coming off of turn two, sending both drivers hard into the backstretch wall, ending their personal quest for the $1000 prize money just seven laps shy of completion. When the race resumed from this lengthy red flag, Eddy led Quinn, Dave Wagner, Ronnie Souders, and Joey Wyckoff.
The attrition machine known as the almighty dollar had one more obstacle to throw in Eddy’s path towards victory lane as Tim Ensign would wreck hard into the outside wall on the front straightaway with just five laps remaining in the marathon, collecting modified standout and opening night winner Tyler Shullick. The race finish would be relatively stable as Travis Eddy motored away in the Howe Racing Enterprises/Don’s Towing #78 over Joe Quinn, Dave Wagner, Ronnie Souders, and Justin Hamilton. Joey Wyckoff, Kevin Jaycox Jr. and Kegan Bartlome rounded out the finishers.
The Melinda! Melinda! Hobby Stocks would round out the feature racing action for the night as Cameron LoPresti would duel Chris Nicastro on the front row. However, LJ Stanley, Brandon Halcomb and Dylan Watson would go three wide on the start and rocket to the top three positions respectively. Halcomb would gain a slight lead from the outside line on lap five only to get a right front flat tire on lap seven.
LJ Stanley, Dylan Watson, Dan Smith, Richie Clem and Trent Aslaksen would make up the top five on the restart with Watson taking the lead on lap eight. Smith and Lille would get around Stanley on lap eleven to gain second and third, but Smith would not just settle with anything other than the lead. Smith and Watson would be side by side with five laps to go.
Dan Smith would take the lead on lap sixteen, and even despite lap traffic with two laps to go, he would motor to the win over Dylan Watson, Kelly Lille, Trent Aslaksen, and Brandon Halcomb. Nick Wolfe, Dave Gaum, Richie Clem, Chris Nicastro, and Cameron LoPresti would finish out the top ten.
This weekend at the speedway, it will be Budweiser weekend as the ever popular Fan Appreciation Night returns to the speedway for the first time this season on Friday night. General admission tickets, hot dogs, Pepsi products, and Budweiser beer will all be priced at just one dollar each. Racing action will include each of the speedway’s three weekly stock car divisions: the Ohio Stocks, Street Stocks, and Hobby Stocks as well as the vintage cars combining sprints, roadsters, and stockers of old.
Saturday night will shadow even the greatness of Fan Appreciation Night as three divisions of open wheel mayhem will converge on the same place at the same time for one of the most anticipated events of the season, the Open Wheel Spectacular presented by Budweiser. The MSA supermodifieds will bring all their winged big block roadsters out of the garage for the season opening event for the statewide tour. In addition, the nonwing Buckeye Super Sprint Series will contest their third event of the season to see if anyone can beat Joe Speakman’s #72, which has swept both events thus far. For the final division of the night, the modifieds will return to the speedway after just five days to recover from Sunday’s grueling event.
