Mansfield to Host Long Awaited Grand Reopening with Winged Warriors of MSA Supermodified Ranks Taking Center Stage
(MANSFIELD, OH, June 15th, 2015)- This Sunday, the big half mile known to the world as the Spitzer Motor Speedway of Mansfield, Ohio will reopen for the first time in five years following a hectic offseason that saw the speedway’s fate come into question a number of times. However, when the calendar rolls over to Sunday, June 21st, the rumor mill will fall silent as the scream of big block methanol burning engines pierces the brutal humdrum tone of the surrounding city.
The winged supermodifieds, sanctioned by the Sandusky-based Midwest Supermodified Association, will converge upon the mecca of speed in order to prove their claim of being “the world’s fastest short track racecars”. This event will be the speedway’s first supermodified event in seven years with it being the first MSA event there since 2006.
With such a wide range of time during which the speedway saw no action, it seems strange to think that the same drivers who were figures of excellence then maintain their dominance so much later. Indeed, drivers like Dave Shullick Jr. and Charlie Schultz are still contending for championships and wins a decade after their feats of success at the historic automobile racing facility. Schultz won a twenty-five lap MSA supermodified event on the high banks of Mansfield in September of 2004 while Shullick set the all-time track qualifying record at 13.334 seconds in 2000 aboard the Bill Kovacs #38.
The modified division, known for their freakish horsepower to tire ratio, will be the main support class for the event. These kings of the Midwestern weekly racing scene will compete for a $1000 payday as they tackle the speedway for thirty action packed laps. The front wheel drive division will round out the card for the grand reopening.
The cars will begin to fill the speedway pit area at noon, with practice beginning at one o’clock. The fields will be set with qualifications scheduled to start at three, and the racing action will commence at 4:30.
