Mods Highlight Spitzer Motor Speedway Event July 5th
This Sunday, July 5th, Spitzer Motor Speedway of Mansfield Ohio will host its second event of the young 2015 racing season. Modified drivers will take center stage as those kings of the weekly short track racing scene compete for thirty laps around the famed half-mile facility. Ohio Stocks, Street Stocks, and Front Wheel Drives will also be in attendance, competing for twenty laps apiece.
The modified division, known for the freakish horsepower to tire ratio and the four-wide salute made famous by race director Chris Mize, saw Bob Sibila take top honors during the grand reopening events. Fast qualifier Jeff Amsdale looked to be in contention until a wreck at the halfway mark of the event took him out of the race. Look for Sibila and Amsdale to both be in pursuit of victory when the green flag drops on Sunday.
The Ohio Stock division, a class featuring template bodied late models, street stocks, and race trucks, will take to the high banks of the speedway on Sunday for their first ever event at Mansfield. At Sandusky Speedway, the division’s home, Jerry Karl seems to show the field around more often than not, winning four out of six feature events so far in 2015. However, look for Rich Clingan and Julia Buckles to both be in contention before the end of the event as they are the only two people to beat Karl this season.
The Street Stock and Front Wheel Drive divisions will round out the card as the two traditional weekly classes make their presence known at this special event. Jim Harkins of Front Wheel Drive fame will look to defend his fast time and feature win from two weeks ago while the Street Stock competition looks to be quite open to newcomers seeing as this is the speedway’s first time running stock cars in 2015.
The pits will see a flood of drivers and trailers around noon as drivers rush to get ready for hot laps at one o’clock. Qualifications are set to begin at three in order to set the stage for racing which is to start at 4:30.
