Shannon Wins Modified Show at Spitzer after Post-Race Inspection Sees Sibila Too Low on Frame Height

(MANSFIELD, OH, July 5th, 2015)- The Spitzer Motor Speedway of Mansfield Ohio saw stellar fields of 25 modifieds and over thirty Front Wheel Drives compete for top honors in the speedway’s second event this season after being closed for several years. Bob Sibila won the modified event only to get disqualified for being low on frame height, handing the win to the #2 car of Joe Shannon. Jon Quinn came off of a spectacular qualifying session during which he took fast time by over a half of a second to win the Front Wheel Drive event while Jeff Karl (Ohio Stock) and Parker Ennes (Street Stock) also claimed feature victories.

In Front Wheel Drive action, George Rossi and Jake Shipman paced the field to the green with Shipman pulling away on the outside line. Rossi and Kelly Lille would bring out the first red flag of the race on lap three when both drivers made heavy contact with the wall in turn three. Both drivers would be declared OK but out of the race. Shipman, Darryl Young, Brandon Halcomb, Jarod Tomlinson and Jim Harkins would make up the top five at this early juncture in the event.

Halcomb would spin by himself on the backstretch after the restart, causing Mike Atwell to hit him in the driver’s side door and Justin Cranmore piled into Atwell. Halcomb and Atwell would pull into the infield pit area at this time as they retired from the event. Shipman, Young, Tomlinson, Harkins, and Jon Quinn sat in the top five positions for the lap three restart.
The race would still not be able to roll smoothly as carnage was unleashed yet again on the drop of the green flag when at least a half dozen cars went spinning on the front straightaway. Jake Shipman, Jim Harkins and Joe Brooks would all be declared out of the event while Darryl Young, Jarod Tomlinson, Jon Quinn, Kelly Horst and Brandon Short made up the top five. Tomlinson and Quinn would rocket around Young on the restart with Quinn passing Tomlinson for the lead on lap four. Tomlinson would nearly spin on lap six coming out of turn two, forcing him to slow down and fall to the fifth position.

The ‪#‎2ez‬ Spitzer Auto World car of Justin Cranmore stopped in turn two on lap nine to bring out another caution. Cranmore and Dan Smith would both pull into the infield pits under this caution while Jon Quinn, Kelly Horst, Darryl Young, Wes Ennis and Jarod Tomlinson held the top five positions.

Horst would take the lead in turn two only for Quinn to draw nearly even with him shortly thereafter. Quinn would finally power to a slight advantage with four to go as the duo ran into lap traffic. Quinn and Horst would encounter lap traffic coming to the three to go mark and split the two drivers as the fierce competitors went four abreast heading into turn one for two laps in a row. Quinn managed to keep a slight advantage and would win by more than a half of a second over Horst, Tomlinson, Ennis, and Young. Kevin Broski, Dominic Cicconetti, Brent Shreffler, Hunter Combs and Brandon Short rounded out the top ten while Neil Broski, Rick Bays, Tom Keller and Jason Cromie finished in positions eleven through fourteen.

Jerry and Jeff Karl led Clayton Karl to the green flag for the twelve lap Ohio Stock feature event with Jerry pulling to the lead. Clayton Karl would get around both his father and brother on lap seven in order to take the lead at the halfway mark in the race. The race-changing moment was when Clayton spun coming to the white flag, destroying the front end of his #21 United Cleaning Contractors/Erie Coast Customs machine.

This would set up a two lap shootout with Jerry Karl leading Jeff Karl. Jeff would take the lead utilizing years of experience and the better motor to go to victory lane in the first ever appearance of the Ohio Stock division at the legendary half mile facility.

The twenty lap Street Stock feature event saw Bruce Reinke and Parker Ennes lead the field to the green flag with Ennes pulling away on the start. Luther Hurley came from sixth to third on the first lap after a crash in the heat race saw him nose first in the back straightaway wall. The #66 of Jason Parsons went to the inside of Ennes for the lead but could not make the pass count during the early stages of the race until lap seven as he completed the pass just prior to the caution flag flying for debris, negating said pass.

Ennes led Parsons, Hurley, Ed Poderzay and Mark Resor to the restart and the running order held until the #77 of Bruce Reinke watered down the backstretch on lap nine, setting up yet another restart with Ennes, Parsons, Hurley, Resor and Bob Lusetti making up the top five. Resor retired shortly after the restart, giving the fourth position to Lusetti as Poderzay filled out the top five. Parsons finally completed the pass on Ennes at the halfway mark of the race on the front straightaway. Meanwhile, Luther Hurley began smoking and was black flagged for the condition on lap twelve putting Poderzay and Lusetti into the third and fourth positions as the field held single file.

Jason Parsons’ night went from great to terrible on lap fifteen as he lost his right front wheel on lap fifteen, forcing him out of the event. Ennes would go on to win easily over Ed Poderzay and Bob Lusetti in the Street Stock division’s first event of 2015 at the Mansfield facility.

Finally, the main attraction of the night, the weekly kings of the short track world known as the modified division, came onto the track for their thirty lap feature event. The #75 JL Reichert Paving machine of Chris Hamilton would battle against the #73 Heritage Plumbing car of Mike Sheppard from the front row with Sheppard taking the lead on the start. Joe Shannon quickly became the man on the move from the fourth position as he passed Hamilton for second on lap two and Sheppard in turn one on lap eleven for the race lead.

The first caution flag of the event would come on lap seventeen shortly after the halfway mark in the race as the #83 Bud’s Place/Khalil Sunoco car driven by Kevin Jaycox Jr lost a right front wheel and smashed the turn four wall. Shannon, Sheppard, Chris Hamilton, Steve Mowery, TJ Stineman, Chad Lemmerman, Dave Dobbins, Bob Sibila, Kenny Sharp and Stephen Klinect made up the top ten at this juncture in the event with sixteen of thirty laps complete.

Shannon would choose the outside line for the restart and make it work to shoot to a lengthy advantage as Steve Mowery took the runner-up position on the back straightaway. Stephen Klinect would spin in the middle of turns three and four after being chopped off by Chad Lemmerman on the twenty-third lap, causing a caution and sending Lemmerman to the tail end of the lengthy field. Shannon, Mowery, Sheppard, Chris Hamilton, Klinect, Sibila, Stineman, Joey Wyckoff, Sharp and Kenny Calhoun would make up the top ten positions for the restart.

Bob Sibila went to fourth on the restart around Hamilton and Sheppard only to have another opportunity to use his restart mastery as Joey Wyckoff spun on the back straightaway. Shannon, Mowery, Chris Hamilton, Sibila, Klinect, Sheppard, Stineman, Calhoun, Sharp, and Matt Leedy made up the top ten for this restart. Sibila went to the second position on the restart but carnage would unfold on lap twenty-four as Mike Sheppard ended up on his roof on the backstretch with Steve Mowery also spun out on the backstretch. A half-dozen cars would take the opportunity to go to the pit area and get adjustments or repairs including Mowery, Joey Wyckoff and Chad Lemmerman.

Shannon led Sibila, Klinect, Stineman, Sharp, Leedy, Calhoun, Johnny “Buckshot”, Norm Taylor and Brad Copen to the restart with Shannon taking the advantage from the outside line. The final caution would come with three laps to go as Ryan Cypher stopped in turn three after laying fluid down the backstretch of the half-mile facility. Shannon, Sibila, Klinect, Stineman, Leedy, Sharp, “Buckshot”, Copen, Calhoun and Karl held down the top ten spots for this final double-file restart. Sibila rocketed to the lead in turn one and went on to what appeared to be his second win in two weeks at the famed facility.

In actuality, Sibila ended up with too low of a frame in post-race technical inspection, handing the win to Shannon as Sibila was disqualified from the event. TJ Stineman, Stephen Klinect, Kenny Sharp and Brad Copen rounded out the top five as Matt Leedy, Johnny “Buckshot”, JR Karl, Chad Lemmerman and Kenny Calhoun made up positions six through ten. Jason Drew, Steve Mowery, Joey Wyckoff, Justin Hamilton and Bill Griffith rounded out the finishing order in positions eleven through fifteen.

The Spitzer Motor Speedway of Mansfield Ohio will be closed for the remainder of July as track officials prepare for the Main Event Racing Series outlaw body super late models to invade the facility on August 2nd for a hundred lap event. The modifieds, Street Stocks and Front Wheel Drives will fill out the card for that event.
