With Summer reaching it's mid point last Saturday, so has the 2015 racing season at Lorain County Speedway. The 2015 Mid-Season Championships were held on Saturday July 11, 2015. In the Modified division it was current points leader Kenny Phillips setting the fast qualifying time of 14.905. The Modified Dash winner was Tigh Shaffer. Modified Heat Race winners were Kurt Hennings and Mike Lawson. The thirty lap Modified feature winner was Jeremie Wiggins, making it four feature wins this season.
In the Crate Sprints, current points leader Chris Gibbs set the quick time of 14.080. The Crate Sprint Heat Race winner was Mark Haury, a former drag racer now in his second week of oval track racing. The twelve lap feature winner was Xavier Howard for his third feature win of the 2015 season.
Jeff Fade Jr., the current Grand Nationals points leader was fast qualifier with a time of 16.320. The Grand National preliminary races were won by Keith Platz. The Grand National fifteen lap main was also won by Keith Platz for his second Grand National feature win of the season.
Dan Smith, who is second in the Charger point standings was the fast qualifier tonight with a time of 18.002. The Dash winner was Trent Aslaksen. The Heat Race winners were Dave Gaum and Brandon Halcomb. The fifteen lap feature winner was Dan Smith.
The Chargers were up first tonight with a fifteen lap feature. In the front row it was Ed Sedlacek and Robert Zelenka with Zelenka leading briefly before Dan Smith worked his way into the lead, coming from the back of the line up. Smith would have a six car length lead over Brandon Halcomb by the mid point of the race. With just two laps to go, Halcomb had erased Smiths advantage and was looking for an opening. It was not to be as Dan Smith held on to the lead for his fourth Charger feature win of the season.
The Grand Nationals were up next for a fifteen lap main. Bill Penn and Keith Platz ran side by side before Platz secured the lead. Jeff Fade Jr. moved into second to challenge Platz for the lead with five laps scored. Running third was Penn and Bob Lusetti. As the laps counted down Fade Jr. continued to hound Platz for the lead. Platz would hold off Fade Jr. to sweep the Grand National division tonight winning the Dash, Heat Race and Feature. This would be the second Grand National feature win of the season for Platz.
The Crate Sprints were pushed out for their twelve lap feature race. Xavier Howard got past polesitter Dylan Watson for the early lead with Chris Gibbs moving into second spot. The caution flag was out on lap six for Mark Haury. On the restart it was Howard still holding on to the lead over Gibbs. Howard would go on to take the checkered flag for his third Crate Sprint feature win of the season.
The Modifieds closed out the evening with their thirty lap feature. In the front row it would be Tim Gullatta Jr. and Kurt Hennings. Hennings took the early lead followed by Gullatta Jr., Ryan Cypher, Bailey Delfosse and Logan Hamilton. The caution flag was out on lap three when Hamilton had a right rear flat tire in turn one. This restart saw Hennings again with the lead before the caution flag came out for a bad start and track debris in the form of a spring from Tigh Shaffer.
It would be Hennings with the lead followed by Gullatta Jr., Jeremie Wiggins, Brad Copen and Matt Wilson. Hennings had a five car length lead over Gullatta Jr. as Wiggins hounded Gullatta Jr. for second. The caution flag was out on lap eighteen for Spencer Stinemans spin on the front straight. This restart saw Hennings pull away from Gullatta Jr. with Wiggins taking second before the caution flag was out again when Brad Copen went off of turn one, making contact with the wall. Copen was not injured.
This restart would have Hennings and Wiggins in the front row, however, it was a bad start and the caution flag was out once again. It would be Hennings, Wiggins, Mike Lawson, Gullatta Jr., and Kenny Phillips now the top five running order. With six laps to go, Hennings went high in turn four allowing Wiggins to take the lead. With two laps to go, Wiggins had opened up nearly a half straightaway lead over Hennings to take the checkered flag for his fourth Modified feature win of the season.
Following tonights races, the new point standings for division leader and runnerup would be Modifieds - Kenny Phillips 413; Jeremie Wiggins 382. Crate Sprints - Chris Gibbs 180; Xavier Howard 156. Grand Nationals Jeff Fade Jr. 433; Bob Lusetti 398. Chargers - Brandon Halcomb 483; Dan Smith 462.
