McVetta Sweeps 2015 Lorain County Supermodified Schedule with MSA Win
Mike McVetta proved his first career supermodified win at Lorain County Speedway during June was no fluke as he capitalized on a mid-race restart in order to wrestle the lead away from AJ Lesiecki and win the thirty lap Midwest Supermodified Association presented by Adkins Glass LLC feature on August 1st. Lesiecki and Kevin Jaycox Jr. both snagged heat race wins following Jim Paller’s blistering fast time in time trials at a lap time of 13.323 seconds around the three-eighths mile speedway.
Joey Wyckoff and AJ Lesiecki would lead the field to the green flag given by chief starter Jason Caranci with Lesiecki pulling to a lengthy early lead in the #77 Outdoor Option /Design Engineering Inc. winged roadster. Meanwhile, “Hollywood” Mike McVetta in the #22 Perfection Fabricators/Banks Manufacturing car began his ascent to the top of the scoreboard almost immediately from the ninth starting position as he cracked the top five with just five laps complete. He would then pass Mansfield winner and current point runner-up Jon Henes on lap thirteen for the fourth position. A spin by point leader Charlie Schultz’ #7 Frank May Garage/Design Engineering Inc. sponsored machine would bring the yellow flag out on the speedway for the first time in the event on lap fourteen as Schultz’ teammate AJ Lesiecki led over Joey Wyckoff, Kevin Jaycox Jr., Mike McVetta and Jon Henes.
McVetta would get back to work on lap fifteen as he passed Jaycox in the #07 Rhode Law Offices/Mays Polynesian Motel machine. He would then fly by the Riverview Lanes sponsored machine of Joey Wyckoff for the runner-up position as he began to hunt down race leader AJ Lesiecki. The race-changing moment would come with ten laps remaining in the event as Joey Wyckoff accidentally bumped the kill switch on the unfamiliar Gillingham #5, causing quite a mess as Jaycox and Danny Shirey spun to avoid. Unfortunately, Jaycox could not avoid and rammed Wyckoff’s machine, resulting in both Wyckoff and Jaycox as well as Charlie Schultz restarting at the tail end of the field.
Lesiecki would lead McVetta, Jim Paller, Jon Henes and Rich Reid to the green flag for this final restart. It was at this time that McVetta would mount the race-winning charge as McVetta cleared Lesiecki for the lead coming out of turn four with ten laps remaining. McVetta would go on to win over Lesiecki, Paller, Henes, Reid, Danny Shirey, Denny Fisher and Kevin Jaycox Jr.
Following the race, Jon Henes now leads the point standings over Jim Paller by two points. Teammates Charlie Schultz and AJ Lesiecki sit three points behind the lead as they are deadlocked for the third position. Kevin Jaycox Jr rounds out the top five just twenty-eight points out of the top spot.
McVetta’s win makes him the first repeat winged supermodified winner this season after the first nine races between MSA and ISMA saw nine different winners. It also makes him the 17th different MSA winner at Lorain County Speedway in 34 races.
The Midwest Supermodified Association will stop in Sandusky on August 15th as six divisions will battle on the weathered half-mile speedway. Open wheel fans will get their fill as supermodifieds, non-wing sprints and modifieds compete. The fans of fendered mayhem will also not be disappointed as the speedway’s Ohio Stocks, Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks will each be in attendance as well.
