On Sept. 26, 1960, the first televised debate between presidential candidates took place in Chicago as Republican Richard M. Nixon and Democrat John F. Kennedy squared off.

It was a date before this one that
Glenn Sherwood and I met presidential candidate John Kennedy and his traveling mate on the Jamestown Ferry as we were travelling from Davisville
over to Newport to retake the battery of tests as we were planning to pursue the Limited Duty Officer program being offered by the navy...I titled the story I wrote about the incident, THE PLEDGE, as that was what we promised that we'd not divulge the meeting with
anyone... I believe I posted that story on here last year...JW
