To me personally, this has been one of those 'Fabled Treaties' not worth the paper it is written on...At the Naval Construction Training Unit CTU) Davisville, Rhode Island, where I was a staff instructor, we trained many, all-service troops for Antarctica duty...perhaps there had been stipulations in that treaty allowing for non-combatant personnel ...Going down to the Ice with the liberties and furloughs allowed in Australia and New Zealand made for anticipated 'choice duty' assignments for Seabees. ON THIS DAY

On Dec. 1, 1959, representatives of 12 countries, including the United States, signed a treaty in Washington setting aside Antarctica as a scientific preserve, free from military activity.
