My foster-sister Fay, whose boy-friend and later, husband, Frank Densmore was a young, 18 year old Marine who was among those who landed on the small Pacific Island. Frank and I would often visit and he would willingly, though most times tearfully, relate stories about Iwo Jima...He knew of Seabees and their heroic actions involved....I've always appreciated his willingness to tell about that historical, military event...I concur he did so willingly before his passing several years ago...JW
ON THIS DAY
On Feb. 19, 1945, during World War II, some 30,000 United States Marines landed on the Western Pacific island of Iwo Jima, where they encountered ferocious resistance from Japanese forces. The Americans took control of the strategically important island after a month-long battle.
