1968… The first AMMI pontoon bridge to be installed in Vietnam was opened for traffic on 30 March1968. Spanning a 140-foot river on Route 1 south of DaNang, the bridge, constructed by MCB-53, was used to evaluate the AMMI bridge concept under actual conditions.
…An NMCB-58 TD-20 Crawler Tractor detonated a mine while operating just off Route 538 in the Hoi An area. 1 minor casualty was incurred and the equipment damaged beyond repair. This work area was extremely hazardous. On 03 April, a USMC wrecker was mined and three Marines were killed. On 08 April, in the same area, an ROK Marine vehicle detonated a mine and two Korean Marines were killed.
1969…A second bridge, recently completed by Seabee Team 12101, was destroyed by an enemy explosive charge in Dinh Tuong Province.
…A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at Liberty Bridge to open the bridge to traffic. MGEN O.R. Simpson, USMC CG 1st MARDIV; RADM J.G. Dillon, CEC, USN, COM3NCB; CAPT J.E. Powell, CEC, USN, COM30NCR; and CDR R.K. Miller, CEC, USN, Commanding Officer, NMCB-53 attended.
…NMCB-22 completed the FLC Data Processing Center. his was a 14,400 s.f. two-story woodframe structure constructed within a 60 day period. It had an extremely sophisticated environmental control system required to house data processing equipment. The scope of work included 3 separate air conditioning systems, installation of modular raised flooring, 20 foot high Ammi revetment surrounding the building and considerable paving and drainage work. NMCB-22 completed some 55% of the project prior to returning to CONUS including most of the building structure, electrical and plumbing rough-in, and air conditioning ductwork.
1970…MCB-10 personnel received Vietnamese medals for their contribution in the construction of the FSI Cantonment at Nam Hoa. The medals were presented by Col. Le Van Than, Province Chief of Thua Thien Province.
1971…NMCB-3’s Alpha Company personnel replaced a culvert on QL-1 which was blown on 29 March.
…NMCB-3’s Detail Unicorn returned to Camp Haskins South from Phuoc Trach after completing its work and Detail Orion returned from Hue.
