VARIETY OF NATIONS DISASTERS
IP: 72.222.137.3

ON THIS DAY
On May 31, 1889, more than 2,000 people perished when a dam break sent water rushing through Johnstown, Pa.

If any of you Seabees ever sat in on a Disaster Recovery class, you probably remember seeing those old-fashioned style photos like from the Civil War
era of this early disaster...Oh, you can bet there were others ...the one I kind of thought I was involved in to a
personal degree was the titled:
BALDWIN HILLS #### BREAK AND FLOOD OF 1963...
Mere days before our battalion, MCB#9 had returned from Okinawa...amidst the
mourning of the assassination of President Kennedy less than a month before, December 14th 1963 the Baldwin
Hills Reservoir #### broke and flooded a large area of Los Angeles.. I was with the wife and kids in nearby Culver City visiting kin and friends...large
scale evacuations from the disaster area into the area we were caused us to
head backup home to Oxnard. Pull it up on Google...history can be interesting but also frightening...Ultimately we
taught that disaster in our classes at
Disaster Recovery that I had orders to report after the New Years holidays...JW
