THE OTHER SHOE.....

ON THIS DAY
On Aug. 9, 1945, the United States exploded a nuclear device over Nagasaki, Japan, instantly killing an estimated 39,000 people. The explosion came three days after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

The main source of world news in the North Eastern Iowa farm communities during WWII
was the newspapers....
The CEDAR RAPIDS GAZETTE and the DES MOINES REGISTER & TRIBUNE. Very few of the
outlaying farms had electricity so much of the developing news was spread haphazardly
and in a confusing manner... When my school year began at the Greeley Consolidated the day after Labor Day, there were many discussions about the war ending with the Japanese surrender...
I would enter the 7th grade and move from the lower classrooms up to the assembly where
that grade thru the 12th would assemble and talk about the news.
With all 12 grades there were only a couple hundred students.
The bombs were the main
topics with discussions about President Truman being a hero or a villian.. Discussions amongst
the various students were varied and sometimes heated to the point of fist-fights at recess.
Lots of additional controversy would be added from the NEWS OF THE DAY playing at the Edgewood theater on Saturday nights. Why was the battle ship USS Missouri used for the
surrender signings instead of the battle ship USS Iowa... How come President Truman didn't
do the signing of that surrender instead of General McArthur....In about five years our
country would be at war again, one we were so ill-prepared for in a strange place called
Korea....We discussers of history and geography remembered that Korea was where those
'Joy-Girls' come from that the Jap soldiers had to entertain them ....someplace near China
for the Jap soliders had those 'joy-girls from China too...JW
