1968…During August because of inmate disturbances, several buildings at the III Marine Amphinious Force Brig were destroyed. NMCB-1 was tasked with the restoration and expansion of the Brig facility. This was high priority work, yet, because of security requirements, required careful scheduling. This, and site work conditions somewhat slowed progress. Most construction was routine, however, the construction required on the Maximum Security Cells was challenging and required the very best efforts of the crew. The building called for 20 concrete walled cells, each with an individual steel head and heavy screened cover, a guard walk capable of looking into each cell, and a tin roof on rigid frame bents. One unusual construction item was a gang lock for all cells which could also be operated individually. This took quite a bit of field innovation to make the design work with material available.
