The below-linked article highlights for me my confusion over the situation in Syria, once the U.S. pulls out our forces.
It sounds like we are turning over the handling of the ISIS problem to Turkey---including our going along with their wiping out the Kurds, whom they consider to be their big enemies (!)(#).
And the fact that the Kurds will apparently be looking to Russia, among others, to provide them with the assistance previously provided by the U.S. (!)

[I can see how Mattis looks upon this as our turning our backs on our allies].
