Camp Barnes received 10 rounds of enemy rocket and artillery fire, The action resulted in 3 KIA’s. CN E.E. Nevins, CEW2 J.P. Hartlage II, and BUL2 J.W. Borders; and 8 WIA’s, SWFCN J.L. Ward, SWF2 G.R. Adams, BUL3 R.A. Terry, BULCN M.C. Radford, CEP2 D.L. Spahn, CEP3 W.D. White, BUL2 E.J. Sykora Jr., and CEW3 K.E. Mullis. One berthing hut was completely destroyed.

Obituary:
John William Borders, Jr., Builder Second Class, United States Navy Seabees. Borders, a Sherman Oaks resident, was killed when a mortar round struck the hut in which he was sleeping.He was stationed at Camp Barnes, Dong Ha, with Mobile Construction Battalion Five, B Company, Navy Seabees. He was 28.

Borders, a graduate of Van Nuys High School, had served in the Navy from 1956 to 1959. But,feeling it was his duty to help in Vietnam, he reenlisted in November 1966.

He spent four months of 1967 in Vietnam, came home, and then returned for additional Vietnam duty just after Thanksgiving.

A Valley resident for eight years. Borders was graduated from Los Angeles Trade Technical College in 1963. As an apprentice painter, he worked his way to journeyman and passed his examination in the top five to become a California painting contractor. He was engaged in that business until his reenlistment.

He is survived by his wife Frances, a daughter Luci 3; his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Borders, Sr. of Van Nuys; three brothers, Robert of San Jose, James of Toledo, Ohio and Steven of Van Nuys; a sister, Sherry Wilde of Toledo, and his mother-in-law, Helen Renshaw of Sherman Oaks.
