There is a lot in the news lately about the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee calling upon the IRS to provide him with the past six years of Trump's tax returns, citing a 1924 law as the basis for this request. (See below-linked article for a discussion of this issue).
Although not specifically addressed in the below article, other articles indicate that the IRS must comply, so long as the request is in connection with a bona fide legislative issue.
It sounds like the Treasury Dept. might deny the request, based upon a contention that a bona fide legislative issue has not been identified in the request.
In this event, the case will ultimately have to be decided by the courts.
