DCR Report: (NMCB-11)
…Khe Sanh Combat Base underwent heavy rocket attacks. During the fighting, Senior Chief (EOCS) Donald Barnes, USN, was killed in action. A few months later NMCB-11’s main camp at Dong Ha was named Camp Barnes in recognition of his contributions to the Seabees.

BUL3 Charles A. Hubbard of NMCB-4 was also KIA in this action.

Barnes, 35, was in the first day of his second tour of Viet Nam when he was killed on June 6, 1967 in Khe Sanh. The Navy equipment operator had written his family that he was looking forward to getting "into the field" with his unit, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Eleven. The 15- year Navy veteran had been tagged as a future teacher in the 1949 John Bartram High School yearbook, and indeed he worked as an instructor in Mobile Construction Battalion 6, a successor unit to the old Navy Seabees of World War II. He was survived by his wife, two sons, three daughters, parents, two brothers and two sisters.

On June 6, 1967, two Seabees were killed and twelve others were wounded when the U.S. Marines’ camp at Khe Sanh Combat Base, 25 miles south of the Demilitarized Zone, was struck by enemy mortar and rocket fire. The two lost Seabees were EOCS Donald J. Barnes and BUL3 Charles A. Hubbard. EOCS Barnes, 35, was in the first day of his second tour of Vietnam. When the mortars began falling, Barnes and some other Seabees took refuge in a trench. Barnes did a roll call and found one person was missing. He told the others to stay put and jumped out to check the bunks for the missing Seabee. While checking for the missing man, a rocket landed close by and took his life.
