Ground Casualty
BUHCN Roger E. Huestis and BUR2 William D. Thompson Jr. were Navy Seabees serving with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Five (NMCB-5), 3rd Naval Construction Brigade, U.S. Naval Forces, Vietnam. On December 14, 1967, they were assisting the 11th Engineer Battalion Marines on Fire Support Base Alpha-3 near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), three miles northeast of Con Thien Hill (Hill 158) in Quang Tri Province, RVN, when enemy mortar rounds fell on their position. Huestis suffered a fatal head wound and Thompson was seriously injured. Thompson was taken to NSA Station Hospital in Da Nang where he expired the following day. BU2 William D. Thompson passed away aboard the USS REPOSE from wounds he received while helping build bunkers for Marines at ALPHA 3 N/NE of Con Thien, South Viet Nam

William Dewey Thompson was known as "Tommy" to his many friends. He had previously served in the Navy from 1950 to 1953 as an Aviation Ordnanceman on the USS Boxer and USS Phillipine Sea and re-enlisted in the Spring of 1967 in the Seabees. He was mortally wounded while building bunkers for the Marines on a hill outpost along the DMZ known as Alpha 3, N/NE of Con Thien, by an NVA rocket. He died aboard the hospital ship USS Repose off the coast of Vietnam.I was only 5 when he died so I never really knew him, yet I have missed him every day of my life.
