As indicated in the below-linked article discussing the 2015 budget, two thirds of the Federal Budget goes to Mandatory Spending--primarily Social Security and Medicare. (Things have probably gotten even worse since that year).
As has been discussed in numerous strings on the website, we will never get a handle on the deficit, unless Social Security and Medicare are made to be self-supporting.
I have argued that the only realistic way to accomplish the above is to increase Social Security taxes and Medicare taxes.
