GROUND CASUALTY
On February 4, 1968, a jeep from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 128 (NMCB-128) was traveling north on Highway 545, three miles west of Red Beach in Quang Nam Province, RVN, when it struck and unknown type explosive. The jeep was destroyed in the explosion and its three passengers were killed. A squad-sized reaction force with two corpsmen from Company E, 2/7 Marines was dispatched to the scene. They swept the area and located the bodies of two Navy Seabees and one Marine. The two sailors were BU1 Paul T. Hallman and LTJG Michael D. Hollingsworth, and the Marine was CPL Otis L. Phillips. The deceased’s weapons could not be found. A mine sweep of the road was initiated after the incident. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and Command Chronology, 7th Marines, February 1968]
