“James Lichliter Picks Up His Second Straight Limited Late Model Win”
“Keith Jackson Wins The Modified Feature With Last Lap Pass”
By Brent Hottle

Winchester, (VA)- With a full day of soaking rains on Friday, there were many questions as to rather or not we could race on Saturday; and if we did race, what shape would the track be in? Once again our “dirtologist” Bobby Dove and his staff knocked it out of the park. Bobby was able to prepare a track that would allow for multiple groove racing and bringing plenty of excitement throughout the heat races. Fans would see side by side racing action during most of the heat races. Once all of the qualifying event had finished, it was time to go racing.

First out onto the track for their main event would be the pure stocks. We would see outside pole sitter Dylan Rutherford take an early lead. Tony Catlett and Ryan Smith would battle early for the second position. As the race progressed Rutherford would continue to hold onto the lead, but now we had two former winners this year in the form of Walter Crouch and Rob Nichols make their way towards the front. Neither driver could find their way around Rutherford. Dylan would go on to win the feature followed by Walter Crouch and Rob Nichols.

After watching plenty of side by side racing during the first feature, everyone were ready to see how much excitement the limited late model division could bring. At the start of the race pole sitter Wesley Bonebrake would take the lead and start to pull away. Then a lap 5 caution would tighten the field back up. We would then see James Lichliter start to challenge Austin Stover for the second position. Lichliter would take over the second position and start to challenge our leader. A battle would start, as Lichliter would appear to gain getting into the corner but lose to our leader off the corner. On lap 18 we would see Lichliter charge to the outside of Bonebrake as he challenged for the lead. Lichliter would wrestle the lead away on the 19th lap and move on to win his second straight limited late model victory.

Next up was the modified division. All eyes were on the 26 car starting field to see what they could do on the racey surface. We would see newcomer to the division TJ DeHaven take the early lead. Early mover Cody Oliver would quickly move into the second position from his fifth place starting spot. Just as he got there heartbreak would happen for our leader TJ DeHaven as he would tangle with a lap car. Oliver would now inherit the lead. As the race progressed Oliver would continue to lead the event, but the action was heating up behind him. We would see Keith Jackson and Mike Franklin battle hard for the second position. Several cautions would slow the event, but it was the final caution on lap 22 that would make the finish an exciting one. We would see Keith Jackson make a charge to the highside of the track. Jackson would pull up beside Oliver and a battle would ensue. Would we see Jackson or Oliver in victory lane? It was too tough to call until both cars charged off of the final turn headed towards the finish line. As Oliver tried to protect his lead, Jackson would carry just enough momentum to edge ahead of Oliver and bring home the win! Jackson would go on to say in his interview “this is one of the most exciting finishes I’ve been in.”

The crate late models would take to the track next. We would see pole sitter Levi Crowl take the early lead and never look back in the 20 lap main event. Daniel Brown Jr would bring home a season best second place finish followed by Scott Sweeney Jr in third.

In the enduro division, we would see outside pole sitter Jason Wilkins lead flag to flag and take home the win. During the event Dylan Rutherford would challenge pole sitter Samuel Caravello for second place. Rutherford would find his way around Caravello, but didn’t have enough to track down our leader. He would have to settle for the second place finishing position.

Last on the night were our SCDRA/UCAR divisions. Matthew Duvall would take the lead and the victory in the SCDRA division. A hard battle would ensue between Shawn Payne and Jeff Wilkins in the UCAR division. Wilkins couldn’t find his way around Payne and would finish second. Shawn would pick up his 5th win of the season.

A big shout out, again, to Bobby Dove and his staff for all the hard work each week. Also a big thank you goes to Greg Gunter, for giving us such a great facility to race at each week. Lastly thank you to all our fans and competitors for all your support.
