The Outbreak
“At dawn on 25 June 1950, opening with a furious artillery barrage, the
Inmun Gun, North Korea’s powerful army, rolled across the 38th parallel into South Korea, and the Cold War had turned hot.” -- News item
North Koreans came down like tigers on sheep,
Their columns were armored, they cut wide and deep,
The R.O.K. army was driven in rout,
How brutal these foes were, we soon would find out.
The Eighth Army’s soldiers had lived high, in peace,
Japan’s occupation was softer than cheese,
When all of a sudden alarm bells went CLANG!
‘Twas “Fall in, dogfaces, it’s war!” , with a bang!
MacArthur responded with air strikes, at first,
Then sent a battalion—that dike quickly burst,
As over and through them the enemy stormed,
Till down at Pusan a perimeter formed.
Wedged tight in a box, Walker called for Marines,
The foe learned its lesson what “Semper Fi” means,
With courage, firepower, and finally, steels,
That Gyrene Brigade set them back on their heels!
Through dust, heat and firestorm, they beat back attacks,
Until the proud Mongols soon showed their proud backs,
While far in the north, at the port of Inchon,
Marines went ashore—and a new war was on!
