He is not quite as afraid as he knows he probably should be. Scott is not so stupid that he does not realise that the wave could be the death of him, but in that moment there was little room in his head for anything as obvious as fear. He was concerned about keep Juliette safe, occupied with thought about finding the fastest way to the Core that they possibly could and ensuring that they would get there all in one piece. The shake in Julie’s voice distracts him further, wanting to reassure her, make sure she knew that he wouldn’t let anything happen to her. “They’ll be fine Julie, they’ll be back being their usual annoying selves in no time,” he joked, hoping that it might help her to relax a bit, though he was aware that there was a possibility that neither familiar would come back to them, it was not a topic to be dwelling on when you were about to run for your life.

As they stepped out of the door onto the grass, they could hear it, the distant roaring growing in intensity as the tsunami grew ever closer to where they were standing. Scott heard the sound of Julie’s heel slapping against the soul of her sandal and wished that he had made sure she had chosen more suitable shoes, it was too late now, they had to move. “C’mon” he said to her, breaking into a run, glad that he had refrained from smoking (mostly) for nearly a year, or else he might have ended up short of breath far more quickly. On each side of them were bodies, other people pressing against them, women screaming, children crying, the almost echoing sound of the stampeding feet seemed to form a cloud above their heads, distracting everyone for the impending disaster which snapped at their heels like a pack of wild dogs. The wall of water however was worse, faster, wilder, more dangerous and completely untameable, there was a reason why man had always had stories warning others to fear and respect the sea. It was a force to be reckoned with.

The Core had never seemed so far away before, it was almost deceiving, how close the highest tower of the castle seemed to be when you could see it from the Lab. There were no animals around, he did not spot even one, nor did he see any birds, they must have known what was coming, as nature always seems to have the ability to tell those who will listen. Feeling a downward tug on his hand, Scott turned his head in time to see Juliette stumble, and tried to pull her quickly to her feet so that they did not have to stop running, they were towards the front of the crowd, but could not risk falling towards the back. It was a selfish thought, and he knew it, but Scott had never shied away from being selfish, he was far too good and used to it, this was about Julie and about him, and them getting through this, what happened to those behind him, who he didn’t know, was sad, but not his problem. He was almost entirely convinced that their attitude, if they had been in his shoes, would have been exactly the same.

The ground began to slope up hill, and whilst such an incline was far from welcome, what it signalled was good news, it meant they were nearly at the castle! Sure enough within the next few moments the castle began to loom over them, the entrance in sight, and he was sure he saw Arthur standing in the doorway, ready to admit them. “Come on Julie” he urged, tightening his grip on her hand, “We’re nearly there!” The sound of feet hitting the cobbles of the courtyard seemed to echo around them, but suddenly he felt her hand come free of his own, heard her voice urging him, telling him to wait. Scott whipped around, seeing Julie running towards a child, lying on its stomach on the stone floor, and the wave getting closer and closer, ready to swallow them both whole. Holding out his hand, he used his powers to summon a wall of ice, making it grow rapidly from the ground, just to try and buy them both some time. The water broke against the structure and them consumed it in the next breath. He reached out, grabbing Julie tightly by the arm and dragging her in through the oak doors, slamming them closed behind him.

“Shhh” Scott soothed her, running his fingers through her brightly coloured hair, feeling the salt particles beneath his fingertips, where the spray from the wave had showered down upon her. “I know, I know,” he reassured her, she was not capable of being what he found so easily, he loved her selflessness, the light side to his dark, its all right, you’re safe now, you’re safe.” He smiled into the kisses she gave him, returning the gesture as his hands found her hips, the familiarly light tugging sensation of her fingers running through his thick brown hair.
