But in dreams I can hear your name.

He is much like a snake in the way he slinks and hisses. Everything about him whispers that he is untrusting, perhaps even sly. But he would not admit these things out loud for all to hear, he is much too crafty for that.

He had not heard her come out into the sunlight, she was so very quiet. If he had there was no doubt in his mind that he would have slipped back into the castle, forever to live with himself. Instead he hadn’t noticed the girl until she had touched his arm which was bare to elbow because the cuffs of his shirt had been rolled up. There is tremor, as if the compounds of life are awakening, and he looks down at her. She is beautiful and young like himself, she is slight and fragile beyond compare.

Simon leans away from her.

And then she is explaining herself, apologizing even though she has done nothing wrong. Simon feels the fabric of his shirt against his shoulders as he shrugs, looks away from her. Those chocolate waves are around his face, enhancing the perfectly masculine jaw. “I have never felt a touch like that before,” he says stiffly breathing through his nose. It was true that touch between flesh and flesh was much different, it made him feel different.

“Where were you when the water came?” He asks in that breathy whisper, lips parted ever so slightly. The sunlight is glinting off the black ball in his lip, making the darkness of his eyes flicker with golden specks.
