Patrick is different in Rosa’s eyes. Not different in a bad way, just different. He’s not like the other boys, the ones that have chased after her and begged for her to love them… but that complicated past is history. She lives in the now, and the current now is centered on Patrick. For the time being… if someone better comes up she may skip along to meet with him, but she doesn’t see that happening for a while. She honestly likes Patrick. He’s an honest guy and that’s what she likes about him.
“Why not?” she asks in response to his question, shifting Angel to a more comfortable position in her arms. “I am allowed to love my child, right?” She kisses his forehead again and coos once more, smiling down at the happy baby in her arms. “That’s right, Angel baby,” she murmurs. “I’m Mama and that’s Daddy.” Patrick begins to freak when she hands him the coin, but she puts her hand up to stop him from taking it. “He’ll be fine, Patrick. He just wants to chew on it, gum it around in his mouth. Babies are like that. Anything that looks interesting, they put in their mouths.” Their little talk is disturbed by the appearance of another girl, who promptly throws her arms around Patrick, crying his name. Rosa stares at her, a seriously unimpressed look scrawled across her face. “It’s great to meet you, Zoey,” she drawls sarcastically, “and I’m Rosa, for your information. Obviously Patrick’s not gotten around to telling you about me? I’m the mother of little Angel here.” She smiles and bounces Angel in her arms. Calming herself by staring at her son, she allows herself to relax a little. In the silence that follows, she notices Patrick grappling for a conversation starter; finally, he settles for introducing them… er, hadn’t they just done that? Well, never mind. As Patrick notes Zoey as his ‘very close, special friend’, one of Rosa’s eyebrows arches. And just what is that supposed to mean? “Like a girlfriend?” she says coldly, putting Angel down at their feet; he’d been squirming uncomfortably in her arms. “You could’ve just told me that you had a girlfriend, Patrick. No big deal, really.” But as she speaks, her voice is flat and emotionless, which obviously isn’t going to convince Patrick that she doesn’t care. Shifting from foot to foot, she stares down at Angel as he sits between her feet. “You said you needed me to watch him for a while so that you could go do something, right?” she inquires without looking up, not even caring that Patrick’s electricity had just about burned a hole in the wall. “You should go ahead and go do whatever it is. I’ll be fine with Angel, I promise… I raised Jace and Alyson all right, didn’t I?” She frowns and falls silent, feeling lost and just a bit betrayed… but that’s fine. It’s not like anyone cared about Rosa’s feeling before. Why start now? She’s just the little slut, remember? all the world is waiting for the sun |
