rulers and guardians of the vista mountain Kopa paced in the doorway, guarding the entrance to the room in which his master had hidden himself away. He knew better than to interfere, had experienced Jensen’s dramatic mood swings too many times to even think of trying to help. All the lion could do was wait, wait for the man to hit rock bottom, to grow lethargic, to expel the pent up frustration which seemed to be ever present in his system and wait for him to rise, to step back into the light and spend his time doing something, anything to keep his mind off all those things he did not want to think of. These episodes, these descents into despair were becoming more and more frequent, the times of contentment growing shorter. The familiar wished that he could help, could get his fairy to open up, but Jensen never did, it was not his place to talk of feelings, he had been told so, over and over until it was not opinion, but fact. The castle had been fairly quiet, at least in the area in which the pair had found themselves, many people returning to their homelands, whilst other left the confines of the stone walls so as to lessen the chance of falling prey to the people under the influence of the curse. The silence, it was like a shroud, draped about Jensen’s shoulders and thoughts ran through his head. It was a great mass of contradictions, resentment towards the father to whom he could never hate, memories of a life he had hated, but one which he was not yet ready to leave behind, an identity he did not really want to have but one which he refused to let go. He was lost, as he always had been lost, resenting those who had told him how to be and what to do, whilst at the same time relying on them to do so. Alone, as he was now, he thought of himself as nothing, just a small boy, trapped inside the body of a man, who could not remember being anything but what he was, and who didn’t even know what that was. |
