As you should all be aware, on the 24th December we will be switching to version 7.
Since I don't think I already have to the general public, I can reveal that the name of the next version is VERSION 7: OPERATION KEMET.
When we switchover, we will also be switching hosts from Awardspace to Hostica. This means we will be moving away from sponsorship and into private funding. Hoof Prince has been our sponsor for a year and a half now; our hosting is completely paid for by them, and our domain for the first year was paid for by them too. We're switching hosts because I feel it's time for us to grow up and move on, but it will be an emotional moment<3 The admins at Hoof Prince have been extremely supportive of us right from the start, and I hope you'll all join me in wishing them a very merry christmas and a very big thank you for everything they've done for us.
On a slightly more down to earth note, the switchover shouldn't mean much of a change for you guys except for three main points. Firstly you will probably see more higher-level staff, which means more people able to do mainframe updates such as doubloons etc. Secondly, there may be a few bugs and the like to start with - since we're moving hosting services we're basically having to re-learn how to make and update the site all over again, so there will be a few transistional bumps at first. All I can ask for is your patience while we get used to messing with the new site.
The third and most important thing is the domain change. We will be switching from www.shamanrpg.net to www.shamanrpg.com. Don't fret about updating your bookmarks, however, since the .net domain will keep going until the spring (I think it expires in April or something?), so you will just be redirected every time you go to the .net address. While you will eventually need to update your bookmarks, you'll have a good few months to do this.
While we're on the subject of bookmarks... we get this issue every version switch, so I figure I'll make it clear now. A lot of RPGs will switch the layout on each individual page, so your address bar stays the same. This is not what we do on Shaman.
You'll notice that once you get past the entrance page, you are directed to www.shamanrpg.net/versionsix/pagename.html. Each version is placed into a different folder - if you copy and paste the address www.shamanrpg.net/versionfive/home.html you'll see the layout for version 5, which hasn't been deleted.
A lot of people bookmark the homepage rather than the entrance page. That's fine, but be aware that you'll have to update your bookmark every version change.
So, we'll go from:
www.shamanrpg.net/versionsix, to
www.shamanrpg.com/versionseven
Don't bother peeking at the new site because I'll put it in a different folder until switchover day and then change the folder name at the last minute, so nehr :P
