I knew the prospect of death frightened many, but I never understood how it could be an issue amongst carnivorous beasts like ourselves. What was better than the actual meal? The hunt. The kill. It may not be blindingly obvious, but I did have weaknesses - Usually the idea of staying in one spot and being turned upon, or the way in which I can get too wrapped up in violence; it was always something I enjoyed, and it was probably classed as sick now. I didn’t care, everyone who came here could smell the blood. They would know what they were stepping in to.
Any expression slipped from my face, eyes staring steadily like spoilt water-paint. Soon I knew most of us, too, would look sickly. Together as a group, we also stood a better chance. Although animals tasted like burnt dirt, I may have to enforce a monthly hunt to provide for anyone falling weak. Then again, if we proceeded in silently taking down travellers, I’m sure we’d be able to find enough victims. Or meals.
I flicked my auds to attention, tilting them forwards to catch each word the new bone-thin wolf spoke. His voice was much stronger than I had assumed it would be, judging by the choking howl, and I returned his grin with a sincere twitch of my lips. His politeness was a welcomed change after the other lot, and I found my respect rise a little. As the first pause in speech fell between us, I didn’t make a move to talk, knowing he hadn’t finished. Only once a small tumble of questions arose did I nod, thinking over how I was to answer.
I did like to think before I spoke. So many times had it gotten me out of trouble.
‘Zombie,’ His name tasted odd on my tongue, something I wasn’t used to saying. ‘I do not mind, it is but the truth. I believe what you’re saying is.. Correct, yes. There are a few others, whether they are trying to impersonate or not, well that’ll become clear sooner or later. My intention was originally to make a place where we can openly wander and feel safe.’
My gaze balanced on Zombie, waiting for any reactions. It looked out of place for a demon such as himself to be presenting before a pack, coven, colony, or whatever we were going to be classed as. At the same time I found it assuring that he had chosen to step up to my home. So, like every other wolf I’d accepted thus far, he was going to be just as welcome.
‘I hope you find that you can feel comfortable here. If there is any trouble, then do not hesitate to see me at all, even if it may present itself as merely a minor thing. There are a couple of wolves here that are not like us, and they wander around during the day. My only ask from you is that these wolves are not to be threatened.’
That was a fair request, and I’m sure he would have no issues about complying with it. I didn’t really have any other rules, not that it had ever occurred that I should. One issue at a time - I’d address things as they came to my attention. There was no rush, and I didn’t want to be one of those alphas who members felt insecure or insignificant around, nor did I wish for them to feel worried about coming to me about anything at all. It was only fair in exchange for them to bare the pack name with pride.. And without a good foundation, pride meant very little at all.
